Removal of Article 370

On 5^th of August 2019, the President of India promulgated the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019. The removal of Article 370 and Article 35A which gave special status to Jammu & Kashmir. A separate Bill – the Jammu and Kashmir Re-organisation Bill 2019 – was introduced to bifurcate the State into two separate union territories of Jammu and Kashmir (with legislature), and Ladakh (without legislature). Article 370 gave Jammu and Kashmir its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters barring defence, communications and foreign affairs. Removal of Article 370 ended special status to the state, giving the J&K legislature free rein to draft its own laws, except in the areas of communications, defence, finance, and foreign affairs. As a result, Jammu and Kashmir had its own constitution, flag, and penal code.

Right to Education shall be extended to J&K to ensure universal education coverage.
Now the 73rd& 74th Constitutional Amendment have become applicable. Constitutional status has been given to local self governments in Rural & Urban areas.
Panchayats will now get direct funding- people will decide their own developmental priorities. This will lead to strengthening of grass roots democracy.
The number of Kashmiri youths joining terrorist ranks has dropped more than 40 per cent since the revocation of Article 370.
